Muni 3 Ganga is a Telugu horror comedy film released in 2015. It is the third installment in the Muni franchise, following Muni (2007) and Muni 2: Kanchana (2011). The film was written, directed and produced by Raghava Lawrence, who also played the lead role of Raghava, a cameraman who gets possessed by multiple ghosts. The film also stars Taapsee Pannu, Nitya Menen, Kovai Sarala, Renuka, Jayaprakash, Suhasini Maniratnam, Sriman, Pooja Ramachandran, Bhanu Chander and Manobala in supporting roles.
The film was a commercial success at the box office, grossing over 120 crore worldwide. Plot
The film begins with a couple visiting a friend's home for dinner. To their horror, they witness a ghostly woman possessing their friend's wife. The ghost reveals herself as Ganga (Nitya Menen), who was killed by her husband Shiva (Raghava Lawrence) for her property. She vows to take revenge on Shiva and his associates.
In the present day, Raghava (Raghava Lawrence) is a cinematographer for a TV channel. He is afraid of ghosts and always takes his mother (Kovai Sarala) with him to the toilet. He falls in love with Nandini (Taapsee Pannu), a program director who wants to shoot a fake haunted house show to increase the TRP ratings. She convinces Raghava to accompany her to a haunted house in Coimbatore, where they encounter five ghosts: Ganga, Shiva, Muni (Lawrence), Kanchana (Lawrence) and Rosie (Pooja Ramachandran).
Ganga possesses Nandini's body and reveals her past to Raghava. She was an orphan who was adopted by a rich couple. She fell in love with Shiva, a kind-hearted man who worked as a car driver for her parents. They got married with their parents' blessings and lived happily. However, Shiva's greedy brother-in-law Marudhu (Jayaprakash) plotted to kill Ganga and take over her property. He hired a goon named Veerabhadram (Sriman) to kill Ganga on her birthday. Veerabhadram attacked Ganga with a knife, but Shiva came to her rescue and fought him off. In the process, Shiva accidentally stabbed Ganga in the stomach and killed her. He then committed suicide by hanging himself from the ceiling fan.
Ganga tells Raghava that she wants to kill Marudhu and Veerabhadram for their crimes. Raghava agrees to help her and takes Nandini's body to Chennai. There, he meets his father (Bhanu Chander), who is a police officer. He also meets his grandmother (Renuka), who is a psychic and can communicate with spirits. She tells him that he has been chosen by Muni and Kanchana, two benevolent ghosts who help other ghosts get justice. She also tells him that Rosie is another ghost who was killed by Veerabhadram for refusing his advances.
Raghava confronts Marudhu and Veerabhadram with the help of Ganga, Muni, Kanchana and Rosie. He kills them brutally and avenges Ganga's death. He then performs the last rites for Ganga and Shiva, who thank him and leave peacefully. Raghava marries Nandini and lives happily ever after.

Production
Raghava Lawrence announced the third part of the Muni franchise in 2012. He said that he would play four roles in the film and that it would be a "bigger and better" film than the previous ones. He also said that he would introduce a new genre of "horror comedy" to the Telugu audience. He roped in Taapsee Pannu and Nitya Menen as the female leads, and retained Kovai Sarala from the previous films. He also cast Jayaprakash, Suhasini Maniratnam, Sriman, Pooja Ramachandran, Bhanu Chander and Manobala in supporting roles.
The film was shot in Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad and Bangkok. The film's music was composed by Leon James, S. Thaman and S. Sathya, while the cinematography was handled by Rajavel Olhiveeran and R. B. Gurudev. The film's editing was done by Kishore Te. The film's visual effects were done by Firefly Creative Studio.
Release
The film was released on 17 April 2015 in Telugu and Tamil languages. The film's runtime was 166 minutes. The film was distributed by Sri Thenandal Films in Tamil Nadu and by Bellamkonda Suresh in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. The film was also dubbed and released in Hindi as Kanchana Returns on 9 June 2017 by Goldmines Telefilms, and in Kannada as Kalpana 2 on 15 July 2016 by Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Productions.
Reception
The film received mixed reviews from critics. The Times of India gave the film 3 out of 5 stars and wrote, "The horror comedy genre is not new to Telugu cinema, but Lawrence makes it work by adding some commercial elements to it. The comedy is hilarious, especially the scenes involving Kovai Sarala. The horror is decent, though not very scary. The performances are good, with Lawrence excelling in his multiple roles. Taapsee and Nitya do justice to their roles, while the supporting cast is adequate."
The Hindu gave the film a negative review and wrote, "Muni 3 is a tedious watch that tests your patience with its clichéd plot, loud music, over-the-top acting and poor graphics. The film lacks originality and logic, and relies heavily on cheap thrills and slapstick humour. The film is a disappointment for those who expect a quality horror comedy from Lawrence."
Box office
The film was a commercial success at the box office, grossing over 120 crore worldwide. It was one of the highest-grossing Telugu films of 2015. It also performed well in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala.
